Hereford to London trains: 2h54 direct, £12,776 a year

Hereford has a direct train to London and it takes the best part of three hours. The fastest service of the day runs to London Paddington in 2 hours 54 minutes, the typical one takes 3 hours 8 minutes, and there are around seven a day. If you want to know the honest position: this is not a commuter town for London, and nothing about the timetable pretends otherwise.

What Hereford does have is a good position on two other lines. Birmingham is 1 hour 21 minutes at its fastest and Cardiff is 55 minutes, both direct, both frequent. Those are the journeys the city is actually built around, and they are the ones worth costing before you move here.

If the train is too dear or the line is shut, Hereford to London by coach is the alternative: National Express route 445 runs three times a day from the Country Bus Station to London Victoria in about 4 hours 40 minutes. The times are below.

There is also a quirk in the fares that is worth several thousand pounds a year, and almost nobody notices it. The cheapest annual season ticket from Hereford to London does not use the direct train.

Which trains run from Hereford

Herefordshire Council lists four service groups through the station, run by three operators. The station itself is managed by Transport for Wales.

The London train is the Great Western service east through Ledbury, Colwall, Malvern and Worcester, then along the Cotswold Line to Oxford and Paddington. The Birmingham train follows the same track as far as Worcester and then turns north. The Welsh Marches line, the Transport for Wales route running north to south through Leominster and Abergavenny, is what gives Hereford its fast link to Cardiff and its through trains to Manchester.

One thing that changes at the end of this year: Great Western Railway transfers to public ownership on Sunday 13 December 2026, when the Department for Transport’s own operator takes over the contract. Timetables and fares are not expected to change on the day, but the brand on the London train will.

Journey times

The London figure is worth putting in context. Hereford is 117 miles from Paddington by rail, which is roughly the same distance as Bristol, and it takes about an hour longer, because the Cotswold Line is largely single track through Worcestershire and the train stops at Great Malvern, Worcester, Evesham, Moreton-in-Marsh, Charlbury and Oxford on the way.

For anything time-critical in London, going via Birmingham and Euston is often quicker on the day even though it needs a change, because the West Coast Main Line is fast and frequent. It is also the route the cheapest season ticket is priced on.

Hereford to London by coach: National Express 445

National Express runs three coaches a day from Hereford to London Victoria Coach Station, every day of the week, on route 445. All three leave from Hereford Country Bus Station on Commercial Road and run via Gloucester and Cheltenham. This is the timetable valid from Wednesday 30 September 2026, read on National Express’s own timetable site on 1 October.

That is 4 hours 40 to 4 hours 45 minutes on the two later coaches, and the early one takes 4 hours 20 to 4 hours 45 depending on the day. Every coach has a ten-minute break at Cheltenham Royal Well and a five-minute stop at Gloucester Transport Hub. The last coach to London leaves at 11:20, so there is no afternoon or evening option.

The coach is the one way to London from Hereford that the rail engineering work below does not touch. During the 26 to 30 October closure between Hereford and Worcester, it runs to its normal times from the bus station, with no change onto a replacement bus. Fares are priced per journey on the National Express site; check them there, since they move with demand.

The £4,936 fare quirk

Season tickets from Hereford to London are not sold as one product. They are sold by route, and the price gap between the routes is enormous.

The two to compare are these.

• London Euston, £7,840 a year (£196 a week, £752.70 a month). Valid on London Northwestern and West Midlands Railway services only, which in practice means the Birmingham train and a change onto the West Coast Main Line.
• London Terminals via Evesham, £12,776 a year (£326.50 a week, £1,226.50 a month). This is the one that covers the direct Great Western train to Paddington.

That is a difference of £4,936 a year, or 39 per cent, for the same city. Buy the fully flexible version, London Terminals by any permitted route, and it is £15,568, or £16,680 with a Zones 1 to 6 Travelcard added.

Whether the cheaper ticket is right for you depends on where in London you are going and whether a change at Birmingham suits you. What is not in doubt is that the direct train carries a premium of nearly £5,000 a year, and the ticket machine will not point that out.

For Birmingham, the same rule applies in miniature: £3,064 a year by any permitted route, or £6,716 if you buy the version routed via Craven Arms. Unless you specifically need the Craven Arms route, the cheaper ticket is the one you want. A monthly Birmingham season is £294.20 and a weekly is £76.60.

Season ticket prices change each March, and annual tickets are not always available for immediate travel. Check the current price on National Rail or with the operator before you budget on any figure here.

Hereford to London engineering works: October and November 2026

Rechecked on 1 October 2026 against National Rail’s own planned engineering pages. The late-evening September closures have finished; the October and November jobs below are all still listed, unchanged, with the five-day closure from 26 October the one to plan around.

Finished: Monday 21 to Thursday 24 September, late evenings

Work between Oxford and Great Malvern closes lines late on Monday to Thursday evenings. The one that matters if you are leaving Hereford: the 22:00 Hereford to London Paddington runs only as far as Worcester Shrub Hill, with road transport onward. Coming the other way, the 21:53 Paddington to Worcester Shrub Hill adds a stop at Didcot Parkway and then diverts via Swindon and Cheltenham Spa without calling at either, and for the Cotswold Line stations you are pushed onto the earlier 21:23 to Oxford and a bus from there.

Sunday 4 October

Track work at Worcester Shrub Hill closes all lines through it. Trains between London Paddington and Hereford terminate at Worcestershire Parkway, with hourly replacement buses running Worcestershire Parkway to Worcester Shrub Hill, Worcester Foregate Street, Malvern Link and Great Malvern to connect with West Midlands Railway for Colwall, Ledbury and Hereford. Buses from Worcestershire Parkway to Great Malvern set down only at Worcester Foregate Street and Malvern Link.

Sunday 25 October, late evening

This one hits the Cardiff line rather than the London one, but it strands the same station. Engineering work between Hereford and Newport closes all lines late on Sunday evening: the 20:30 Manchester Piccadilly to Cardiff Central terminates at Hereford with a bus onward, and the 20:46 Milford Haven to Hereford terminates at Newport with a bus up to Hereford.

Monday 26 to Friday 30 October, all week

The big one. Track renewals close all lines between Worcester Foregate Street and Hereford for five weekdays. No trains at all on that stretch.

• Great Western Railway: London Paddington services run only as far as Worcester Shrub Hill, some only to Worcester Foregate Street.
• Buses replace trains between Worcester Shrub Hill, Worcester Foregate Street, Great Malvern and Hereford. Your ticket is valid on the West Midlands Railway replacement buses at no extra cost.
• West Midlands Railway runs a heavily reduced Birmingham to Worcester Foregate Street service on the Monday only.

There is no all-rail route out of Hereford towards London by either the Paddington or the Birmingham and Euston option that week. Budget an extra hour for the bus to Worcester.

Sunday 1 November, late evening

Amended late-night Transport for Wales services to, from and via Hereford, with overnight work between Hereford and Newport closing some lines.

Monday 2 to Thursday 5 November, late evenings

A repeat of the September pattern between Oxford and Worcester Shrub Hill. Again the 22:00 Hereford to London Paddington runs only between Hereford and Worcester Shrub Hill, and the 21:53 Paddington departure diverts via Swindon and Cheltenham Spa.

Getting to and from the station right now

Hereford station is being rebuilt around a new Transport Hub, and that has changed how you get to it.

Since 9 May 2026, private vehicles have had to use the station car park to pick up or drop off passengers. The old kerbside arrangement is gone for the duration of the works. If you are meeting a train, allow time to park.

The hub itself is the visible half of a wider scheme. In May 2026 the council put it at around 65 per cent complete with an expected finish in October 2026, and described a transport programme worth more than £27 million, including £19.9 million of Levelling Up funding. Its February 2026 update valued the hub itself at about £10 million and set out what it will contain: an enclosed waiting area, covered cycle parking, on-street bus stops, a pedestrian zone, seating and planting, a café and a metal canopy over the whole thing.

If you are not taking the train

Two things worth knowing for short journeys in the city.

Beryl bike hire operates across Hereford, with bays at the railway station, Old Market and the Cathedral. A pedal bike costs £1 to unlock and 5p a minute; an e-bike is £1.50 and 12p a minute; an e-cargo bike is £1.50 and 20p a minute. Minute bundles start at £5 for 100 minutes and a pedal-bike day pass is £12. Leaving a bike outside a Beryl bay adds a £5 fee, and outside the operating zone another £5.

Who runs Hereford station?
